Chardonnay
75cl * 12% ABV * Kent, England
Gusbourne sources its fruit from 60 hectares of vines in Kent, on a south facing ancient escarpment in Appledore, and 30 hectares near Goodwood in West Sussex. Across these vineyards, clay soils bring a richness to the wine, while the coastal influence add a distinct freshness and salinity.
Their Blanc de Blancs is pretty spectacular, and was served at the 2012 London Olympics opening party and at Buckingham palace for visiting heads of state. Today, the wine is served in some of the country's top restaurants, including Belmond Le Manoir au Qat'Saisons and The Clove Club in London.
It is made from carefully selected Chardonnay parcels that best reflect the estate's terroir. Fermentation in old oak and extended lees aging add depth, texture and complexity. On the nose, there are notes of green apple and grapefruit-citrus, along with a distinctive mineral edge, almost chalky. It's very clean on the palate, with baked yellow apples and fresh ginger. There's a nice creaminess to the wine, lifted by its salinity. A perfect pairing for oysters.
