Syrah
3x75cl * 13.5% ABV * Cote Rotie, Northern Rhone, France
Delas Frères, founded in 1835, is a historic Rhone Valley winery based in Tain-l’Hermitage and forms part of the esteemed Roederer Collection. Today, the wines are crafted by winemaker Jacques Grange (who is originally from Burgundy).
Seigneur de Maugiron Cote-Rotie is a 100% Syrah blend from grapes grown across the Cote Brune and Cote Blonde, hand-picked plot by plot. The wine is aged for 14-16 months in new or one-year-old casks.
The nose is powerful, with blackcurrant, redcurrant, liquorice, smoke and wood. The palate has a tightly knit tannic framework and a silky texture. Full-bodied and balanced, it finishes long and refined, with fruit, smoke, spice and structure.
Pair with meat like roast beef or game bird, venison, lamb or truffle and mushroom-based dishes. Drink 2027 through 2040.
Best in Show at Decanter Awards for 2023 vintages: 'Eleven (historical) Best in Show appearances for the Rhone Valley but never a Cote Rotie... until this year. It's a wine from the 2023 vintage - a very good one in Cote Rotie, since the deluge of rain that affected other parts of the Northern Rhone in mid-September spared this northernmost appellation almost entirely, and the slow start to the summer accelerated gratifyingly during an August when the terraces genuinely roasted. We don't, as we taste, know the precise vineyard sources for this wine, but in style it seems more Brune than Blonde: dark in colour, with splendidly smoky, tapenade-like aromas (some found undergrowth and stone) rather than pronounced floral lift, while the palate is poised, lively and vivacious but underscored by ample backbone and tension, too. Look out for the salty finish behind the fruits and the attractively forthright tannins. It's both classic and generous and would make a good prospect for ageing - though there's nothing overly forbidding for those who would like to start sooner.' 97pts
'Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron skips out with bright, vibrant notes of black raspberries and fresh blueberries, followed by hints of black pepper, garrigue, and lavender. The medium-bodied palate is soft and crisp with vivacious red and blue fruit layers and a long perfumed finish. This is made from 100% Syrah.' 95pts, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (July 2026)
'Black raspberries, cassis, violets, blood orange, incense, and pepper notes all emerge from the 2023 Côte Rôtie Seigneur De Maugiron, a barrel sample that's clearly a terrific wine in the making. It's medium to full-bodied, has a wonderfully pure, polished, elegant mouthfeel, just about perfect balance, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It's impeccably made.' 94-96pts, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2026)
