Cabernet Sauvignon
75cl * 14.5% ABV * Penedes, Spain
Founded in 1870, Torres has gone on to become one of Spain and South America's most established wine brands. And their Mas la Plana has rightly earned its place as one of Spain's most iconic wines. In 1979, this Cabernet Sauvignon - produced exclusively from a 29 hectare vineyard - triumphed in a blind tasting in Paris against some of the most famous wines in the world and marked the new era for Familia Torres and Spanish wines in general. The 2015 vintage in particular is highly regarded among wine critics and it's drinking brilliantly now.
'The herbal 2015 Mas La Plana is one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignons from Spain. It's sleek and polished, with varietal character intermixed with a Mediterranean side. The palate is medium to full-bodied with the fine-grained and elegant textbook tannins of the variety. This is from a warm and dry year, and the wine is ripe and powerful but in the Torres style, which is always nicely crafted, balanced and polished.' 93pts, Robert Parker
'A complex wine that has plenty of ripe red-plum and blueberry notes that lead to a palate that offers a chalky, modern and fresh array of ripe plums and berries with assertive, spicy oak.' 93pts, James Suckling
'Transparent ruby. Warm, mellow, well-melded tertiary aromas on the nose. Good freshness on the finish as well as the ripe fruit. Nothing like a bordeaux – softer and sweeter initially with much less aggressive tannin – and why should it be? Very mellifluous. Lovely drinking now with the lightest hint of spearmint and some herbal quality. Great to have such mellowness so soon. Not great value but not an outrageous price for a historic wine that can provide this much pleasure.' 17.5pts, Jancis Robinson
'Opaque ruby. Black and blue fruits, cherry cola and subtle herb, vanilla and floral notes on the spice-tinged nose. Taut and sharply focused, offering very good depth and sappy bitter cherry, cassis and licorice flavors that become sweeter on the back half. Chewy tannins frame the impressively long, energetic finish, which echoes the cherry and floral notes.' 93pts, Vinous
