Alicante Bouschet, Syrah
75cl * 14.5% ABV * Alentejo, Portugal
Vinha do Souto is the flagship red from the Symington family’s Alto Alentejo estate, and a brilliant expression of what this cooler corner of southern Portugal can deliver. A blend of Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, it combines depth and power with welcome freshness and poise.
The fruit comes from low-yielding vines on the slopes of the Sao Mamede range at an altitude of 500m. The wine is aged for 11 months in new French oak before bottling.
There are aromas of ripe black fruits and wild berries, layered with floral notes, hints of Mediterranean herbs and a subtle smokiness. On the palate, it is full and expressive, with opulent but polished tannins and a lively acidity that ensures balance.
The wine is drinking beautifully now, but has the structure to develop further over the next three to five years. A great pairing for grilled meats, slow-cooked lamb, or rich mushroom dishes.
