The Tokara winery is nestled among vineyards and olive groves on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, with sweeping views across False Bay and all the way to Table Mountain. It rests on the Stellenbosch side of the Banghoek Valley, between 350m and 550m above sea level. The combination of altitude, deep, rich, decomposed granite soils and the unique aspect of the property make for exciting variability between the vineyard sites. Soil profiles are of weathered sandstone and decomposed granite, the combination lending structure, perfume and longevity to the wines produced here.
Their 2022 Chardonnay shows aromas of lemon zest, lime blossom and yellow apple, layered with toasted brioche and a hint of vanilla spice. The palate is silky and vibrant, with a slight chalky texture and subtle oak. Bright acidity brings lift and poise, leading to a dry, mineral finish.
This wine is delicious now but will also do nicely with a few years in bottle. It’s a perfect match for grilled prawns, roast chicken or creamy pasta dishes.
