Cabernet Sauvignon

75cl  14% ABV Tuscany, Italy

Solaia comes from the heart of Chianti Classico at the Tenuta Tignanello estate, nestled between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. The estate covers 319 hectares, of which 165 are dedicated to vineyards, including the prized Solaia and Tignanello plots. The soils here, originating from Pliocene marine marlstone rich in limestone and schist, combined with hot daytime temperatures and cool nights, produce grapes of exceptional ripeness and structure.

The 2013 growing season required particularly careful vineyard management. Higher than average rainfall during winter and spring delayed budbreak, while a cool and wet May and June supported vigorous vine growth. Warm, dry conditions in July and August allowed the vines to recover, and a mild September with pronounced day–night temperature swings encouraged a long, even ripening.

Harvest began later than usual, with Cabernet Sauvignon picked from October 7–16. The fruit was meticulously sorted by hand, with only perfect berries selected for vinification. Fermentation took place in conical tanks with precise extraction to ensure balance, freshness, and supple tannins. Malolactic fermentation occurred in French oak barrels, followed by 18 months of aging in 100% new oak. Each parcel was vinified and aged separately before blending to create the final wine.

The resulting Solaia is intensely coloured and expressive, with layered aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and dark cherries, enriched by notes of violet, mint, and balsamic herbs. Subtle hints of cocoa, coffee, and sweet spice come from the oak. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, with vibrant acidity, velvety tannins, and remarkable depth. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, showing the wine’s tremendous aging potential. Pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, slow-cooked lamb, game, and rich pasta dishes. Drink now to 2045

'Wow. This is a stylish young red with currant, light herb, spice and bark aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and attractive now but better in 2020. A classic as always.'

'The best vintages of Solaia are 1990, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and now 2013. Marchesi Antinori's 2013 Solaia is a profound and meaningful wine that is based mostly on Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. It sports a dark and thick texture with plump fruit and spice, grilled herb and black pepper. The bouquet is intense and layered with the kind of complexity that is best admired as the wine shifts and evolves in the glass. The textual impact is also impressive—you feel the inherent power and the structure, but these elements are never overdone. The best is yet to come; this Solaia is built for long cellar aging'
