Barbera
75cl * 15% ABV * Piedmont, Italy
Founded in 1922 by Alfredo Prunotto, this estate quickly became one of Piedmont most dynamic exporters and, after his retirement, was passed to his friend Beppe Colla, now a revered winemaker and one of the founding fathers of the modern Piedmont style.
Their fruit comes from the renowned Nizza area, where loam and sandy soils allow the Barbera grape to fully express its aromatic intensity, freshness, and vibrant character. The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and gently crushed before maceration, which is followed by maturation in old oak barriques, preserving the purity of the fruit while adding subtle complexity.
On the nose, the wine is generous and expressive, revealing layers of blackberries, cherries, and strawberries, complemented by red-fruit jam, violets, and delicate spice notes of cinnamon, vanilla, and green pepper. The palate is full and supple, with rich plum and chocolate flavours framed by velvety tannins and a refreshing vein of acidity that gives structure and balance. The wine closes with a long, harmonious finish, showcasing both the finesse of Prunotto’s craftsmanship and the distinctive character of the Nizza terroir.
Prunotto Barbera Nizza pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as lamb or beef, as well as rich poultry dishes like duck breast with berry sauces. With its vibrant acidity and juicy fruit, it also complements aged cheeses, mushroom risottos, and hearty pasta dishes like ragù.
