There's more to Italian sparkling wine than Prosecco - for those that don't know, Franciacorta is Italy's answer to Champagne, made in the same style, from the same grape varieties to the same exacting standards.

The Montenisa estate sits in the rolling hills around the hamlet of Calino, close to Lake Iseo, right at the heart of the Franciacorta appellation. This corner of Lombardy has long been devoted to wine-making; it is thought that the very name Franciacorta comes from Petite France, a term of affection bestowed by Charlemagne himself. The estate’s villa and surrounding vineyards once belonged to the historic Maggi family, and since 1999 they have formed the home of Marchese Antinori Franciacorta. For the Antinori family, whose winemaking roots go back more than six centuries, Franciacorta offered the chance to bring their experience to this esteemed terroir.

Cuvée Royale is produced from a careful selection of Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco. After fermentation in stainless steel, the second fermentation takes place in bottle following the méthode traditionnelle. The wine then rests for a full 36 months on the lees, gaining complexity and texture before disgorgement.

The nose is subtle yet layered, showing ripe orchard fruit, white peach, and a gentle hint of citrus zest, underpinned by savoury notes of fresh bread and almond. On the palate, the mousse is delicate but firm, carrying flavours of stone fruit and a touch of brioche. The finish is long and dry, with a balance of freshness and creaminess.

Enjoy as an aperitif, or serve with delicate seafood, vegetable dishes, and white meat hors d’oeuvres.
