This Tain l’Hermitage based winery was founded by Jean Orëns Ferraton in 1946 and continued by his son, Michel. Following an accident which left Michel Ferraton paralysed, the winery was purchased by Michel Chapoutier (a close friend of Michel Ferraton) in 1998 but the wine making team and vineyards continue to be managed completely independently. Ferraton’s vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic.

As a region, Saint-Joseph spans a large area from north to south along the left bank of the river, with the vineyards of Tournon and Mauves considered to produce the finest quality grapes. It is from these vineyards that the Ferraton wines are produced. Whilst predominantly known for its powerful reds made from Syrah, the white wines are equally noteworthy in both quality and ageing potential.

The wine is rich and unctuous with generous peach, apricot and mango fruit character, a stony minerality and distinctive lanolin notes. The wine has a beautifully long finish. It pairs wonderfully with a chicken pie or a simple steak tartare.
