Bel Canto is Pegasus Bay's reserve dry Riesling, made only in outstanding vintages. With a warm spring followed by ideal summer conditions, 2023 was one of these. The old vines in North Canterbury's Waipara Valley yielded perfectly ripened fruit. An extended hang time followed by hand selection ensured only the most expressive, concentrated bunches were harvested.
Fermented slowly at cool temperatures until fully dry, the aromatic vibrancy of the wine is preserved. Throughout this process, a little of the natural carbon dioxide was retained, bringing a delicate spritz that lifts the palate and sharpens the finish, adding energy to the wine's opulence.
The nose shows tropical fruits, citrus and florals. Notes of pineapple, mango and orange blossom alongside quince and kumquat, with an underlying subtle minerality. The palate is textured and layered, livened by a good acidity and structure. The finish is long and dry. Perfect with goat cheese and quince croustade.
