Xinomavro
75cl * Organic * 13.5% ABV * Macedonia, Greece
Greece is in throes of a vinous renaissance. Gone are the days of dodgy, pine-scented retsina served in even dodgier tavernas - Greek wine is every bit as fine as the great bottles of the rest of Europe.
Located in Velvento, Western Macedonia, Voyatzi Winery is a family-run estate founded in the 1990s by brothers Yannis and Nico Voyatzi. Situated at 340 meters in the foothills of the Pieria Mountains near Lake Polyfytos, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and organic farming practices.
This rich and elegant red perfectly captures the essence of Greece’s native Xinomavro grape. In the glass, it shows a deep, dark red colour. The nose is brimming with ripe red berries, layered with vibrant aromas of spicy oak, cinnamon, olive, and tobacco. On the palate, sharp tannins and gentle acidity provide structure, complemented by a silky, almost oily texture.
The finish is long, with notes of dried berries and spice. This would pair beautifully with rich grilled meats, or tomato-based dishes like pasta and sausages.
