Assyrtiko
75cl * Organic * 13.5% ABV * Macedonia, Greece
Greece is in throes of a vinous renaissance. Gone are the days of dodgy, pine-scented retsina served in even dodgier tavernas - Greek wine is every bit as fine as the great bottles of the rest of Europe. Bracingly fresh and mineral, Assyrtiko has much in common with Albariño, its slight saltiness will set off seafood perfectly.
Located in Velvento, Western Macedonia, Voyatzi Winery is a family-run estate founded in the 1990s by brothers Yannis and Nico Voyatzi. Situated at 340 meters in the foothills of the Pieria Mountains near Lake Polyfytos, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and organic farming practices.
The Lefkotsiknias is a brilliant expression of the high altitude terroir, with the grapes grown organically on the stony slopes of the Pieria Mountains near Lake Polyfytos. But whilst crisp and precise, there is a distinctly Mediterranean ripeness to the fruit.
On the nose, expect lemon zest, white peach and fresh herbs with a saline minerality. The palate is fresh with citrus fruits, stone fruits, and even crushed seashells. Textured, layered and complex, the finish is long, clean, and savoury, with good citrus and minerality. A great companion to grilled octopus or seabass with lemon and herbs.
