Merlot (80%) Cabernet Sauvignon (20%)
75cl * 14% ABV * Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Once a priory of Benedictine monks cultivating their own grapes, Château Prieuré-Lichine is now a Grand Cru Classé of the Margaux appellation. It was bought by Alexis Lichine in 1951 - the same year that he published his renowned Wines of France. He also happens to be the father of Sacha Lichine, creator of Whispering Angel. This is the second wine by the Château and a wonderful addition to their range.
This wine is an excellent expression of the terroir, and the legendary 2022 vintage, treating us to a perfectly aromatic, fleshy, velvety Margaux. The preceding winter was mild and dry, followed by heat spells throughout the summer, which meant a staggered ripening of crops across the appellation. Thanks to some late September rains, the Cabernet Sauvignon was able to achieve full ripeness. After three weeks of harvest, the grape quality was exceptional, but yields were low.
These extremities contributed to what is both a powerful and refined wine. Ripe red and dark fruits on the nose, with hints of mint and rose petal, and a silky roundness on the palette. The wine is well balanced with good acidity and well-integrated tannins, and Cabernet Sauvignon brings an energy, depth and density to the blend that is testament to its aging potential. This would pair best with an earthy, meaty dish. Herb-crusted roasts of lamb, and anything mushroom or truffle.
