Vieux Telegraphe is name synonymous with quality Chateauneuf-du-Pape. But its story began on the La Crau, in the late 1800s. At the time La Crau was a plateau considered particularly unfit for cultivation, thanks in part to its thankless position and high density of pebbles. But as we all know poor soil can sometimes produce the best vines and the pebbles, certainly the bigger leant themselves to retaining the days heat into some of the cooler nights. Through hard dedication of the Brunier family, Vieux Telegraphe survived and thrived.
This classic GSM blend really brings its sense of place to the palate. Firstly, there is a hint of rose petals. Then the dark rich red and black fruits, in particular cherries of both colours, mixed with a touch of spice and herbs, rough earth and smoky notes blended and balanced with good tannin and a solid acidity. This is a classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape and one that will be enjoyable now but will evolve with some aging in bottle. The half bottle will be great for younger consumption and is perfect for a picnic or a small tipple with a meal. Ideal for Christmas, a touch of red to accompany the dinner.
A rack of herb-crusted lamb or a ratatouille will be deliciously paired with this wine.
96-97 Points, James Suckling, April 2022, 'Such a deep and meaty nose with a slew of wild-herb, savoury and subtle balsamic notes. Then comes the expansive and very concentrated palate, which reveals so many spicy nuances as it rolls over the palate, the stunning fine tannins pushing the finish out even further. A grenache-based blend from 60-year-old vines.'
