100% Furmint
150cl * 13,5% ABV * Vegan * Tokaj, Hungary
Whilst typically known for its dessert wines, the Tokaji region of Hungary produces some brilliant dry whites from its native Furmint grape.
At the end of the 17th century, Prince Rákóczi classified the twenty-eight wine producing villages of the Tokaji region into First, Second and Third Growths. Maintaining its close link to nobility, many of these vineyards would produce wines for the Royal Tables of French and Russian Emperors. Napoleon III ordered 30-40 barrels of Tokaji for the Imperial Court each year!
This magnum comes from the First Growth vineyard of Szent Tamás. It is an excellent expression of the region's terroir, with clay soil and volcanic rock brining a distinct minerality to the wine.
This is one of 300 bottles produced from the 2020 vintage, characterised by an excellent quality of grape presenting good acidity balanced by a richness on the palate. Whole bunch fermentation and maturation in Hungarian oak bring structure and complexity to the fruit.
Aromas of ripe apples and pears are followed by notes of peach and apricot that compliment the volcanic minerality. This is a textured yet elegant wine with a long and subtly spiced finish.
Pairs nicely with white meat, pasta dishes, Asian food and seafood. Would also stand up well to food with a bit of spice! Try with chilli prawns or a classic beef stroganoff.
