Tokaj, Hungary

The Tokaj wine region lies to the north-east of Budapest at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. Perfectly situated for the creation of botrytis on the vines, and the resulting world-famous dessert wines, Tokaji also creates a lesser known range of dry white wines, especially from the native Furmint grape as seen here.

Tokaji wines have enjoyed a long, glorious history. Catherine the Great of Russia stationed a contingent of Cossack soldiers in the region to protect the vineyards and escort the wine on its journey to St Petersburg. Many European monarchs are known to have enjoyed Tokaji wines. Napoleon III ordered 30-40 barrels of Tokaji for the Imperial Court each year. Moving to current times.... Tokaji is now certified as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), identifying a product that originates in a specific place or region, the quality and characteristics of which are essentially or exclusively due to a particular environment with its inherent natural factors. In other words, Tokaji wines registered as PDO, as this one is, are those that have the strongest links to the place in which they are made.

The Royal Tokaji Wine Company, founded in 1990, has become one of the most admired wineries in Tokaj. In the words of wine writer and co-founder of Royal Tokaji, Hugh Johnson, the wines would "make angels sing out loud in praise".

Here you will find a fresh, crisp but textured wine exhibiting all the unique Furmint characteristics. Partly fermented in stainless steel tanks and partly in a mixture of new and old oak barrels, the wine is then left on lees for further maturation to add layers of complexity.  Aromas of grape flowers, apple and pear combine with flavours of ripe apricot and peach to produce a sleek, intense dry wine with a long, refreshing finish.

A fabulous aperitif, and a truly sublime pairing with seafood, white meats, firm goats cheese and slightly spiced dishes.
