Chardonnay
150cl * 13% Meursault, Cotes De Beaune, Burgundy, France
Les Gouttes D'Or, in English the droplets of gold, is located on the lower slopes of the Cote D'Or ridge, as it gently elevates away, just south of the village of Meursault. In fact, the closest of the Premier Cru sites to the village itself.
The soils are limestone-rich amongst stone and chalky soils. A thin topsoil means the site has perfect drainage and is highly regarded for the production of Chardonnay. One of Meursault's finest, the limestone really lends a great minerality to the wine.
Alongside the fantastic geological structure, 2018 was hailed as one of the finest vintages that Burgundy has seen. The year was perfect. Conditions were just right to produce a bumper crop but with no loss of complexity to the fruit. Truly, 2018 was a year for the droplets of gold.
This wine will be aromatic throughout its life. Notes of almond and hazelnuts, set amongst floral and mineral notes. There are also notes of honey, butter and citrus fruits. On the palate the wine is rich and unctuous. It fills the palate with its weighty character but never overpowers. instead it is silky as the notes from before come forward on the palate. A long and balanced finish will leave one wanting to taste this wine again.
This magnum will be perfect to allow the wine to age delicately. Perfect to lay down for a few years.
This wine also deserves a good pairing. Consider truffled Bresse chicken or Parma ham wrapped scallops cooked in a marsala and sage butter.
