The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries, and exporting it for four; that’s twenty-six generations of uninterrupted family ownership. The first recorded mention of the family dates from 1188, when they worked in the silk trade. They moved to Florence in the early thirteenth century, and remain central figures in the fabric of the city with Piazza Antinori situated in the city's historic centre.
Taking its name from the nineteenth century railway station located on the estate and just a few steps from the vineyards, Pian delle Vigne, is to be found just 6 kilometres from the hill-top town of Montalcino in the Tuscan province of Siena. Purchased by the Antinori family in 1995 Pian delle Vigne stretches out over an area of 454 acres of which 160 acres are planted with vineyards. The estate’s namesake wine, Pian delle Vigne, represents Marchesi Antinori’s deeply personal interpretation of the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's grandest appellations.
Antinori's Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino aims to showcase the wonderful fragrant characteristics of pure Sangiovese, the historic grape variety of Montalcino. The vineyards for this red wine are situated on calcareous clay soils which create a style which is fresh, mineral in character, and excellent for immediate drinking. Aged in large oak casks this 100% Sangiovese is an intense ruby red colour. Fragrant on the nose, black cherry and blood orange combine with hints of violet and light balsamic and vanilla nuances to compose a complex bouquet. On the palate it is fresh, savoury, with elegant and silky tannins. The aftertaste, long and persistent, is characterized by notes fruity citrus fruits and delicate spicy and vanilla aromas.
Store in a cool place, away from light, lying down. Open at least 15-minutes before serving, however recommended decanting time 1-2 hours. Serve at 18°C.
