Pol Roger is best known as Prime Minister Winston Churchill's preferred Champagne. Churchill liked to drink his Pol Roger by the pint (a size no longer made, sadly, but roughly equivalent to 50cl), and it is reckoned that in the last 10 years of his life, more than 500 cases of the stuff passed through his cellars. Of her father's fondness for Pol Roger, Churchill's daughter, Lady Soames, once said, "I saw him many times the better for it, but never the worse." During the War, Germans even placed spies in Pol Roger in order to trace Churchill's planned movements around the UK by the shipments of Champagne for him!

Sir Winston Churchill loved the robust and mature wines of Pol Roger, and whilst the cépage has changed with the times (to include a higher proportion of Chardonnay), the structure, power and longevity of Pol Roger vintages remain. The 2018 Brut Vintage is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. The House remains dedicated to vintage wines that will stand the test of time, and are quite sure the Brut Vintage 2018 is a wine that could be enjoyed at Pol Roger’s 200th Anniversary in 2049.

Pale yellow in colour; still looking youthful. Weighty stone-fruit on the nose evoking richness and intensity, alongside enticing elements of yeast contact. Abundant complexity and body on the palate with ne length and proper acidity. Still young and tight, but a serious young Pol Roger Vintage nonetheless. With some time to develop this will be a worthy successor to 1988, 1998 and 2008.

"Pale lemon with a lively and persistent mousse and an attractive nose of Spring flowers, hawthorn and apple turnover, a hint of iodine too. Subtle and not thus far betraying the warmth of a generous vintage, the wine is composed yet incisive, fresh and yet profound, with orchard fruit and a citric cut shaping the palate, and notes of verbena and sourdough in support. Expertly crafted and forthright, without indulging to excess, the 2018 is poised and confident but far from brash and with a clear potential to evolve gracefully. The wine broadens beautifully with a little time in the glass, with hints of honey and biscuit evidenced, and will do so equally impressively in bottle over the next five years and beyond. I think this would score 93-95 points, the latter number reflecting how it will evolve and improve in the short to medium term." 93-95 points, Simon Field MW, Decanter

"The 2018 Vintage is a very pretty, open-knit Champagne to drink now and over the next 10-15 years. In a vintage in which so many wines are on the lighter side, the 2018 is super-expressive, with lovely depth and impeccable balance. The 2018 can be enjoyed now, but I would prefer to cellar it for a year or two. Hints of pear, dried flowers, kirsch and mint are nicely layered on a spine of fruit and structure." 93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
