Founded in 1981, Ornellaia is now one of the most iconic wineries in the world, thanks to knock-out wines like this. Made with the same passion and attention to detail as the estate's flagship wine, the second wine of 'super Tuscan' producers Ornellaia, 'Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia' combines approachability and complexity of flavour with proven ageing potential. Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia was introduced in 1997 and is made from fruit from younger vines, with a higher percentage of Merlot.
Nestled in the foothills near Bolgheri, the estate lies just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. During the summer months, cool sea breeze caress the vineyards and nearby olive groves, while during the winter the hills provide protection from the cold north winds. The 115 hectares of vineyards benefit from a unique combination of maritime climate and a complex mosaic of marine, alluvial and volcanic soils. All the grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed and gently crushed before being fermented in stainless-steel vats, each variety separately. The wine is cellared for 15 months, blended after the first 12 months and then returned to barrels for a further three months. After bottling, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is aged for an additional six months prior to release.
Le Serre Nuove shows great freshness, ripe sweet tannins and superb concentration; it displays all the signs of a vintage with excellent ageing potential. As such this is a much anticipated release, especially after Bolgheri's 5-star vintage rating. Winemaker Olga Fusari sees the 2021 vintage as one of exceptional quality thanks to it's unique combination of fruit intensity, bright acidity and integrated tannic structure making it a truly memorable wine.
~ Winemaker's notes ~
“The product of a vintage that has proven to be high calibre and deeply satisfying, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2021 allows the tannin qualities and balanced concentration to shine through. The wine displays a bright ruby red with the usual purple highlights in the glass. Refreshing on the nose with pink pepper and cypress berries aromas, which are reminiscent of the Mediterranean shrub. On tasting, the wine is elegant with a lovely acidity and an enduring and savoury finish, which entices further enjoyment.” Olga Fusari – Winemaker (April 2023)
"A firm and linear red with currant, berry, chocolate and cedar character. It’s medium- to full-bodied. Fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s tight and focused. Energetic and bright. 50% merlot and 28% cabernet sauvignon and the rest split equally between petit verdot and cabernet franc." 94 points - James Suckling
