Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir)
75cl * Vegan * 13% ABV * Ahr, Germany
Fifth-generation winemaker Alexander Stodden wears the immense tradition with which he has been entrusted with quiet determination and fortitude, although he plainly admits his aim is to "make the perfect Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from the Ahr." His late father, Gerd, was one of the very first Spätburgunder producers in Germany to give his wines some serious French oak treatment, a wine making philosophy that Alexander continues today. But, it was Alois Stodden who really put the winery on the map, when he originally planted their prized Pinots in 1900.
The tiny Ahr district on the Rhine near Bonn in Germany offers exceptional vineyard locations such as the Recher Herrenberg, even so careful pruning and green harvesting are essential to ensure low yields and good ripeness. This is a brilliant introduction to the estate, from a selection of vineyards in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Dernau and Rech. A Pinot Noir from steep slopes, which offers early drinking pleasure at a young age. Fermentation took place in old 1000 litre oak casks, where the wine was also left to mature. Inspired by Burgundian Pinot Noirs, this has slightly smoky notes on the nose. Deep in colour, silky and clean, it is full of ripe fruit, with good structure and soft tannins.
Serve between 15 - 18°C. Delicious when paired with spinach gratin, roasted game, red meats or cheese platters.
