De Bortoli, founded by Italian immigrants to Australia in the 1920s, is today one of the largest and most innovative wineries in the region today. Their speciality has been dessert wines - particularly their "Noble One", the most awarded sticky in the world. Their approach is very Old World and their belief is that sustainable vineyard practices will deliver exceptional fruit quality as well as real environmental benefits.
To the blind taster, this could almost be Burgundian, showing some gentle notes of citrus and florals and some rather restrained nutty oak character. Gently textured and savoury on the palate, we'd drink in large Burgundy glasses (not too cold!) with with mussels in garlic and parsley butter.
