The Vergelegen Estate (vergelegen meaning 'situated far away') was given to the governor of the Cape in 1700. The grapes for this wine were sourced from north and north-westerly vineyards at Vergelegen, Somerset West, where granite and weathered shale soils dominate. The blend is 50% Cab Sauv and 30% Merlot., Cabernet Franc at 13%, Petit Verdot 5% and 2% Malbec.
Bright dark red. On the nose striking cassis underlined with cedar and a fresh ripe fruit character. On the palate the freshness carries through with a sprightly, lingering finish. This all results in a striking cassis underlined with cedar and a fresh ripe fruit character on the nose. The freshness carries through to a lingering finish. Drinking beautifully and will improve even more in the bottle over the next 5-10 years.
