Sangiovese

37.5cl * Vegan & Organic * 13.5% ABV * Tuscany, Italy

Founded in 1974, Avignonesi is the leading biodynamic winery in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany. Vino Nobile is their flagship wine and the 2017 vintage was a Wine Merchant Top 100 award winner in 2022. Richer than Chianti, yet providing better value than Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Italy’s hidden treasures.

Made with 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on small, bush-trained 12- to 38-year old vines in nutrient-rich calcareous and clay soils and fermented with natural yeast, this wine embodies its Tuscan terroir. Aged for 18 months in both large Slavonian oak casks (botti) and oak barriques, it still displays ripe cherry and plum on the palate. Intense garnet in colour, there are aromas of red berries, cherry and pomegranate and the unmistakable violet scent of Sangiovese, with a touch of vanilla and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is well balanced, supported by a dense tannic texture with a long, persistent finish.

Drinking very well now and equally has great aging potential, however will benefit from decanting.

Wine Merchant Top 100 Winner, 2022

"Certified organic and following the principles of biodynamic viticulture, this lovely red opens with enticing scents of camphor, pressed rose petal, forest floor and licorice. Smooth and savory, the linear, elegant palate delivers juicy cranberry, pomegranate, coffee bean and orange zest alongside taut but extremely refined tannins. Surprisingly fresh acidity for the hot vintage keeps it balanced. Drink through 2029." Kerin O'Keefe
