Marlborough’s Dog Point is a partnership between viticulturalist Ivan Sutherland and winemaker James Healy, both formerly of Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay the pair began making wine from fruit sourced from Sutherland’s own vineyards in the Wairau Valley. They’re now one of the very few producers in Marlborough to grow their own grapes as well as making the wine, which gives them more control over the whole process. They also hold the largest organic vineyard area in New Zealand, selling 70% of the fruit and only keeping the very best for themselves.
Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights here make for a long grape growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavours. Their 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is crisp, vibrant, and impressively complex.
"Tasted in a line-up of dozens of Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, the 2022 Dog Point stood out for all the right reasons. It is elegant with appealing ripe nectarine fruit followed up with bright but balanced acidity. It offers delightful texture, making an attractive light-bodied wine with some appealing succulence through the mid-palate, potentially due to lower yields. A triumph in a difficult year, showing rigorous selection. Drink 2023 - 2027." 92 points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous
“Powerful green-fruit aroma with some struck match. Admirably ripe but tense fruit on the palate – well counterbalanced by acidity. Very bright and energetic with no shortage of interest and nuance on the mid palate.” 17.5 points, Jancis Robinson
“Nettles, thyme, green apples and grapefruit on the nose. Medium-bodied, sharp and clean cut with a refreshing core of citrus and green fruit.” 93 points, James Suckling
