The late founder Bob Oatley championed the oak bombs we've come to expect from the region back in the 1970s, but as time went on, he started to move towards a more restrained, European-style of winemaking. The Finisterre range focusses on small-parcel wines with focus and purity: this Chardonnay is reminiscent of a rich and ripe style of white Burgundy, this shows nectarine and lemon peel, alongside some toasty oak and spice.
The name Finisterre comes from the patch of land (and also the name of Bob Oatley's house) and means 'the end of the earth' - apt as the vineyards are so close to the very edge of the Margaret River area of Western Australia. The winemakers also rather cheekily say that they go to 'the ends of the earth' to make this wine taste the best it can...
Pair with meaty fish (halibut), shellfish (scallops) or simple poultry dishes.
