Kanonkop Estate is a South African red wine producer located on the low slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, between Stellenbosch and Paarl. Simonsberg is known as the "red wine bowl" of South Africa, with long summer days, cooling sea breezes and ideal soils for red wine varieties.
Listed as a ‘first growth’ by Tim Atkin MW, Kanonkop is famed for its red wines, particularly Pinotage, which makes up 50% of vineyard plantings, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Merlot (7.5%) and Cabernet Franc. The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town. Paul Sauer 2015 is the first South African wine to be awarded 100 points in Tim Atkin MW’s South African Report.
This legendary wine is named after Kanonkop’s patriarch and is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The depth of flavour, structure and complexity offered by these three grape varieties is accentuated by 24 months’ ageing in new French oak. Blackcurrant notes combine with aromas of Cape wildflower and cigar box to offer a regal wine recognised as one of the best South Africa has to offer.
Pair with all types of steak, meat casseroles, roast leg of lamb and matured cheeses. Optimum drinking from 2026 to 2047.
~ Winemaker's tasting note ~
"Deep ruby colour. A classic, perfumed nose packed with cherries, cassis, cedar
wood, tea leaves and tomato puree. The palate is an explosion of fruit with
lovely dark berry, rose petal, toasted oak and hints of plum. A complex multilayered, refined wine with a beautiful structure, balanced acidity with finegrained tannins and a long finish. Bottled elegance."
