Merlot, Cabernet Franc
75cl * 14.5% ABV * Bordeaux, France
Owned by the Austrian von Neipperg family (best known for their holdings in Saint-Emilion: La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffeliere, Clos de l’Oratoire, Payreau), d’Aiguilhe is located on the border of the Cotes de Castillon and is credited with putting this previously unknown region on the map. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc sees a ripe and perfumed Right Bank-style claret with espresso, smoked wood and sweet spice notes beneath ripe black berry fruit and sour red cherries. Rather dark and savoury on the palate, with firm tannins, offering real ageing potential. Superb value; a crowd-pleaser. Drink from 2020 – 2030.
Decanter, James Lawther MW, 92 Points: "Ripe, seductive nose: lush fruit with a whisper of chalky freshness. The palate is plush, juicy and gourmand but vibrant, too. Bound by a powerful but refined tannic frame. Appealing, great balance."
