Muscat
50cl * 15% ABV * Pantelleria, Italy
Pantelleria - an island off the south-west coast of Sicily, approaching Tunisia - is famous for its black, volcanic outcrop, blindingly bright sunlight and strong winds, which can make it a difficult place for viticulture. Vines are grown very low in shallow craters to protect them from the elements. Partially sun-dried Zibibbo (aka Muscat) grapes added to the must result in a sweet, sticky desserts wine redolent of dried apricots, orange blossom and honey. Serve slightly chilled, with fruit crumbles, honey-based desserts or hard cheeses. We also like to pour it over good quality vanilla ice cream.
