Muscat (Zibibbo)
50cl * 15.0% ABV * Pantelleria, Italy
Pantelleria - an island off the south-west coast of Sicily, approaching Tunisia - is famous for its black, volcanic outcrop, blindingly bright sunlight and strong winds, which can make it a difficult place for viticulture. Vines are grown very low in shallow craters to protect them from the elements. Partially sun-dried Zibibbo (aka Muscat) grapes added to the must result in a sweet, sticky desserts wine redolent of dried apricots, orange blossom, vanilla and honey.
Serve slightly chilled, with fruit crumbles, ricotta cheese accompanied by honey and toasted pine nuts, or hard cheeses. We also like to pour it over good quality vanilla ice cream and at Christmas it is a beautiful accompaniment to Stollen and Panettone.
