This large estate of 131 acres has been run brilliantly by the Bonnie family since their acquisition a number of years ago. The quality of the white and red have soared to exceptional heights, and it is certainly still one of the more realistically priced wines of Pessac-Leognan and classified crus.
The 2016 vintage was legendary for Bordeaux. Long and slow ripening has refined the tannins and developed complexity in the flavours and aromas, whilst maintaining plenty of freshness. Pair with beef carpaccio, and dishes such as tournedos Rossini, rack of lamb, veal paupiettes forestières or venison fillet with a coffee and amaranth sauce.
La Reserve de Malartic 2016 will see its peak between 2030 and 2033. However, it is very much enjoyable now, though ideally decant 2 to 3 hours before tasting.
Wine geek fact: Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere's flagship wine joined the star-studded line-up in Death on the Nile. Malartic features alongside world-class talent in the 2022 big-screen Agatha Christie thriller.
