Antinori - "Super Tuscans" - New Releases
Two Italian stallions from our favourite "Super Tuscan" stable
Antinori is the last of the "Super Tuscan" wineries to release their 2023 vintage this spring (March 2026). But it was worth the weight. We've focussed on two of the wines they're offering - both stunning, and worth laying down if you have the cellar room.
Guado al Tasso

Guado al Tasso comes from Antinori’s Bolgheri estate, one of the most celebrated names along the Tuscan coast. The vineyards lie in the “Bolgheri Amphitheatre,” a natural plain encircled by hills and opening toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. This unique geography shapes an ideal microclimate of warm days, cool nights, and steady maritime breezes - conditions that allow the grapes to ripen fully while preserving freshness and aromatic precision.
The estate spans 320 hectares under vine, atop a fine gravel known locally as scheletro. These soils are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc - the core varieties that define this wine.
Fans of Netflix's drama The Beast in Me might remember that this was the wine left on the main protagonist's doorstep as a symbolic over-the-top gesture. It was a clever and subtle nod to the fact that the character in question knew his wine, choosing this over the more famous Tignanello.

Tignanello 2023

Tignanello is produced exclusively from a parcel of 190 acres of limestone-rich soils at the Estate, raised 350-400 meters above sea level with a southwestern exposure. Known for being the first Sangiovese aged in small oak barrels, and the first contemporary red wine to include non-traditional varieties (e.g. Cabernet) in the blend, this wine marked an exceptional milestone at its first production in 1970. Since then, it has only been made in favourable vintages. The well-recognised label was created by Italian graphic and interior designer Silvio Coppola, and includes the historic family crest of the Antinori family.
Drink 2029-2052
'A fantastic vintage of this Tuscan superstar, a super Tuscan so clearly and surely but undemonstratively so, with no excess – just poise, harmony, elegance and, above all, finesse. This is gorgeously beguiling and enticing aromatically, drawing you in to its dark web of berry and stone fruits, graphite, cracked black pepper and subtler floral and herbal notes. I love the little hint of cornflowers, lilac and blueberry. Shimmering in its crystalline purity with the ultra-fine grained, almost glassy, tannins pixilating the mid-palate picking out details as they do so and offering an early glimpse of the staggering complexity and layering of this wine..' 98/100 -Colin Hay, TheDrinksBusiness.com (March 2026)
