Grenache/Syrah * 75cl * Biodynamic * 14% ABV * Côtes du Rhône, France
Chapoutier has become a household name in the Rhone and since its inception in 1808 has expanded its vineyard holdings throughout the region, including some of the best sites in Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint Joseph, Cote-Rotie and Chateauneuf. This is an entry-level (/negociant) bottle in price, but punches well above its weight in terms of flavour: soft and seductive, showing notes of ripe black plum and cherry, as well as a touch of garrigue (wild herbs and shrubs), this medium-bodied with a good kick of peppery spice on the finish. The eagle-eyed will spot the Braille writing on the front label - Chapoutier has included Braille on all its labels since 1996 after the owner heard that his friend would have to take someone with him if he wanted to go and buy wine from a shop. Drink this exceptional everyday red with lamb cutlets rubbed with rosemary and thyme or a shepherd's pie.
