Our resident Master of Wine, Rob MacCulloch, writes: "Underlying the initial farmyard aromas, there's plenty of fresh raspberry and cream aromas - not dissimilar to Raspberry Ripple ice cream - which can't fail to be attractive. Flavours are more cherry-edged with a distinct sense of southern, sunny ripeness: these are less herbal flavours than found in Chianti, with more densely intense Morello cherry flavours dominating. Under this fruit, however, is Sangiovese's classic supporting combination of acidity and tannin to make this a more savoury wine that demands pairing with food, as well as ensuring a cellar life of five years or more. This doesn't disappoint - attractively richer than Chianti Classico, yet better value than Brunello di Montalcino, this is one of Italy's hidden treasures."
