Certain classic wine styles have gained cult status, not just for wonderful flavours, but also for the timeless methods in which they are made. Occasionally, some wines combine both, and Amarone is justifiably a cult classic. Made in the Veneto region from Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grapes that are dried via the “appassimento” process, whereby they are laid out on bamboo racks in lofts, where the drying process concentrates flavours before the grapes are fermented into a rich and full-bodied wine.
Masi are the largest producers in the region and are justifiably famous for the consistency and quality of their drying methods and the wonderful wines they make. This one is very dark ruby red with baked fruit, plums and cherries on the nose followed by hints of coffee, cocoa and more fruit on the palate. A very well balancedand powerful red wine that can match the strongest of red meats, the most pungent of cheeses, and is able to age for at least 30-35 years.
