Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

75cl * 13% ABV * Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France

Château Calon-Segur is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux and is unique in the way that the vineyard is just one single plot surrounded by a tall stone wall. It's little wonder then that this very special 'clos' is classified as a Third Growth, with the quality to match.

The château was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur in the eighteenth century. He was also lucky enough to own, ahem, Châteaux Latour, Lafite and Margaux. To say I'm jealous would be an understatement! Perhaps though, it's testament to the very special plot in Saint-Estèphe that the Marquis decided to add his name to the château alongside the word Calon (calons were the small boats that once transferred timber down the Gironde) and famously stated, "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon." And his heart has stayed there ever since - just look at the label...

But now to the wine itself. It's a classic example of how great the millennial year was for Bordeaux. Rich red berries merge with cigar box and ash, while the firm tannins give the medium-bodied palate a real coat hanger from which to drape itself. Tobacco, black fruit and dark cherry notes all combine and are balanced by a tooth-edge of acidity.

Enjoy with venison and buttered celeriac.
