Furmint
50cl * 9.5% ABV * Tokaj, Hungary
South-facing parcels of Furmint vines overlook the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. Misty autumn mornings encourage the development of 'noble rot' in the grapes, this botrytis fungus intensifying the flavour and sugar concentration. Berries are picked one-by-one and fermented slowly in Hungarian oak to produce a rich, sweet wine full of peach, orange peel, fig and floral notes, after which it is aged in small oak barrels for at least four years and then a further 9 months in bottle before release. Heavenly nectar richly deserving of its reputation as "The king of wine, the wine of kings". Drink alongside nuts, faux/foie gras or blue cheese.
