The Vergelegen Estate (vergelegen meaning 'situated far away') was given to the governor of the Cape in 1700. The grapes for this wine were sourced from north and north-westerly vineyards at Vergelegen, Somerset West, where granite and weathered shale soils dominate.
The 2012-2013 growing season was long and mild, with ideal rainfall at crucial times, leading to perfect physiological ripeness. The harvesting of Merlot, earliest of the Bordeaux grapes, commenced on 5 March and Cabernet Sauvignon on 15 March.
The blend is 43% Cab Sauv and 40% Merlot. The other grape varieties only make up 17% of the blend, with Cabernet Franc at 11%.
This all results in a striking cassis underlined with cedar and a fresh ripe fruit character on the nose. The freshness carries through to a lingering finish. Drinking beautifully and will improve even more in the bottle over the next 5-10 years.
