75cl * 14% ABV * Rioja, Spain
Castillo Ygay is exclusively produced only in the best years from Marques de Murrieta's finest single vineyard, La Plana. Such is the producer's dedication to only making it in the best years that only six vintages were produced in the 2000s. Tempranillo - arguably most at home in Rioja than anywhere else in the world - is joined, somewhat controversially, with Mazuelo (aka Carinena). After meticulous picking, the fruit is fermented and matured for two and a half years in American oak barrels and three years in bottle before release. Concentrated and intensely fruited, showing notes of ripe red fruits, floral tones, truffle, incense and baking spice. Satin-soft in texture with fine-grained sticky tannins, this will age gracefully for the next few decades. The winery suggests a number of perfect dishes to pair with it: turbot in a pil-pil sauce; barbecued pigeon; roasted beef sirloin or suckling pig. They also suggest you decant for 20 minutes and serve at around 14-16 degrees.
