Inama, a third-generation, family-owned winery in Verona, Italy who has been solely dedicated to producing quality wines for the last 40 years. The estate's founder, Giuseppe Inama, began purchasing small plots of land back in the 1950s. Over the years, this would grow to the 30 hectares that the estate currently maintains. Unlike a lot of wineries who use organic labelling to upsell their product, Inama chooses to omit this on their labelling, despite the fact that their agricultural system is all organic. They also follow a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winery to create artisanal wines with a sense of place.

In the 1990s Giuseppe’s son, Stefano, took over the winemaking and began leading the estate in an exciting new direction with the introduction of more international grape varieties. Inama is the first estate to start a project with the Carmenere grape in the Colli Berici area and to give an identity to this variety with a new DOC: Colli Berici Carmenere Riserva. This wine began as a project in 2005 to offer as an alternative to Valpolicella. The label was designed by Michela Coltro, an artist from San Bonifacio, as something young and lively, yet still classic and respectful of the style used for all the other labels. The idea was to design a cherub holding a cornucopia of fruit from which a bunch of red grapes, representing this Carmenere.

Harvested by hand, taking care not to break the skins of the berries, grapes are fermented in stainless steel for around 20-25 days, then matured in old oak barriques (80%) and stainless steel (20%) for 12 months. Camenere Più is blended and is bottled after a period of 4 months in stainless steel. It continues to mature for at least 6 months before being released onto the market. The resulting wine has a vivid ruby core with a narrow purple rim and an elegant nose of small dark berries, cocoa and black pepper. The palate is balanced and fresh, fruity and spicy, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish.

This will pair well with pancetta and salami with garlic, grilled pork, vegetable dishes with polenta, mushrooms, and cheese. Try with local traditional dishes: Val Liona DOP ham, Sopressa Veneta DOP, Bigoli pasta with duck ragu!

Serve at around 16-17°C and decant for half an hour before serving.
