Its richly aromatic and silky-textured Clarets are often amongst the best of the appellation. The estate’s history dates back to 1152 when the wine was officially served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to King Henry II, the beginning of a special relationship between Bordeaux and England.

The d’Essenault family owned the estate over five generations and rebuilt the existing château at the end of the 16th century. Surrounded by a moat, it is one of the oldest châteaux in the region and is frequently described as the most romantic in the Médoc. In 1945 the Cruse family – already established in the Médoc for more than 150 years – purchased the property. Today Emmanuel Cruse runs the estate with the Lorenzetti family (owners of Châteaux Pédesclaux and Ladouys). This 2008, from a vineyard that was badly hit by hail that year, has an elegance and style that is very much in keeping with southern Margaux. There is also a fine balancing density, sweet plum fruit and, with its fine tannins, great aging potential.” 93 points – Wine Enthusiast Dec 2010.

“The 2008 d’Issan has a fragrant bouquet with pretty blackberry, briary, cedar and crushed rose petal scents that unfolds nicely in the glass. It is not a powerful Margaux, yet it is very well defined, “correct” in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite rounded tannin. This is well balanced with plenty of freshness, crisp and taut and offers a tang of spice towards the finish. This 2008 is evolving with style and panache, drinkable now but probably offering another decade of drinking pleasure.
