A pioneer in planting vineyards in the remote Duoro Superior and instrumental in resurrecting the iconic Touriga Nacional grape variety. Cockburn's was considered among the finest producers of its era. The linchpin of Cockburn's Vintage Ports has always been Quinta dos Canais and its Touriga Nacional plantings. This variety, which all Duoro winemakers take for granted today, would have disappeared from the region had it not been for research conducted by John Henry Smithes, the legendary Cockburn's viticulturist and winemaker during the 1930s. His Finding rehabilitated this historically low-yielding variety and under Smithes's influence, Canais was planted with a high proportion of Touriga nacional - typical Cockburn's boldness.

True to Cockburn's legacy, the cornerstone of the 2024 is Touriga Nacional, making up almost two-thirds of the blend. All of it was drawn from the finest plots of the variety at Canais known as Bico de Pato ('duck's bill'). This Touriga Nacional was surprisingly low-yielding compared to other Symington vineyards - barely above half a kilogram per vine - and this is evident in the excellent concentration and structure of the wine. Canais also contributed a proportion of the Sousao used in the blend. The remaining components came from the other Cockburn property: Quinta do Vale Coelho and consisted of Touriga Franca and Sousao.

Bright, red fruit aromas of cherry and strawberry with hints of kirsch, chocolate and an element of anise. Alongside the lifted, fresh fruit there is a floral touch of rockrose, a wildflower endemic to the Duoro and traces of herbal spices. Gorgeous, concentrated palate of red fruits and peppery spice and then an undertow of black tea and tobacco from the grainy tannins. Suggestions of kirsch and an attractive schist and flint finish with Cockburn's signature grip.

Please note that prices are in-bond and exclude VAT and duty, which are payable when the wines land or are released from our bonded warehouse.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0437/0215/7464/files/large_Product_33778-Cockburn_s-2024-Vintage-Port_75cl.jpg.0.jpg?v=1779289880
