Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
6x75cl * 13.5% ABV * Bolgheri, Italy
Quietly, elegantly and almost involuntarily, the Incisa della Rocchetta family set to release the wine that would revolutionise the Italian wine scene creating a totally new genre: the Super-Tuscan.
Tenuta San Guido is now a legendary estate and was first planted in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who noted the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves. When, in 1968, Sassicaia was finally commercially released, it took the fine wine world by storm. Cementing its iconic status, in 1994 it was granted its own appellation – Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC despite the fact that wine is only a small part of the Tenuta San Guido story. This vast Bolgheri estate of 2,500 hectares encompasses a large forest, olive trees, arable crops, a world-renowned horse stud and the Padule di Bolgheri nature reserve and wetland. Vines occupy only 4% of the total acreage.
Sassicaia, is made up of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc (12%). The grapes that go into the making of Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia are from vineyards covering only around 97 hectares of the total 2,500 hectare DOCG Sassicaia Bolgheri estate. Named after the stony soil which it comes from and embodies, Sassicaia is known for its supple texture, elegance and perfume. The 2022 is truly an aging wine and requires time to achieve its full potential. Patience will be key and delicate and attentive care, even down to proper aeration, will be key to the success of this vintage.
Pair with a hearty venison wellington.

“The wine is tightly coiled and concentrated. It feels almost cinched at the waist, with a fascinating tension between the weight of raspberry, blackberry and strawberry coulis fruit and the wine's verticality, as if it's trying to burst out. Lovely mid-palate sapidity is allied to fresh acidity and fine but dense tannins, making for a dark horse of a Sassicaia that isn't giving much away today but will greatly reward those who can cellar it for 12 years and more. ‘What is sure is that 2022 will need a lot of time, but will also have a long life,’ said Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta. A hot vintage, 2022 caused the team to work in the newly completed refrigerated warehouses in San Guido, even moving the sorting table inside. Shorter macerations and 23 rather than the more typical 24 or 25 months of ageing in wood helped to maximise the freshness” 97 Points, James Button, Decanter
