Syrah

75cl * 13.5% ABV * Swartland, South Africa

Launched only in 2007, the Mullineux name has already become synonymous with dynamic and exciting South African winemaking, specialising in Mediterranean varieties sourced from sustainable and dry farmed parcels of old vines. Chris and Andrea have already gone on to be awarded best winery and winemakers internationally and are keen to express the unique geology of the Swartland through their wine.

Granite does exactly that. The grapes are farmed from one vineyard, the Jakkalsfontien, which uniquely is geologically granitic soil which allow the wine to express perfumed aromas, freshness and length. In particular granite is perfect for providing a fresh character to the wine, which will go for many years as a result.

The wine goes through judicious vinification and is aged in the winery for 22 months in oak, 500L barrels for 12 months (50% new oak) and then 10 months in 2000L foudres. The wine spends a further 8 months resting in bottle before release. The finished wine is unfined and unfiltered. Red fruit, lily and light spices on the nose give way to red berry compote and a stony minerality. This is a well balanced and integrated Syrah that would rival the best of the Northern Rhone.

There is no reason that this wine shouldn't be drinking for the next 15 years if well stored. Pair with a roasted ribeye joint, a rack of lamb or venison haunch. However, don't be afraid to also drink with something a little spicier, like a Moroccan lamb or Aubergine tagine or a mutton biryani.

97 Points, Tim Atkin

94 Points, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 2022, 'Bursting from the glass with bright, sweet red fruit, the 2020 Granite Syrah is fresh and floral with an instantly pleasing aromatic nose. Medium to full-bodied and subtly spiced, the palate offers flavours of crunchy red fruit with hints of potpourri that sway with elegance and finesse. The wine reveals a nimble brightness to the mid-palate, showing purity with youthful, gripping tannins. The Syrah concludes with a gracefully elegant finish that brings me back for more.'

94 Points, James Suckling, 'A lovely nose of red cherries, black licorice and dried rosemary. Medium - to - full-bodied with fine, textured tannins. Lovely grip on the palate with an array of red and blue fruit. Layered and expressive with steady intensity and a persistent finish.'

17.5 Points Jancis Robinson "Masses of sweet-fruit ripeness but the balance is impeccable. Another fine wine in this series." Drink 2023 2032
