The Duas Quintas Red is a wine from the Upper Douro, made with traditional grape varieties to express the potential of the region, specifically the two vineyards of Quinta de Ervamoira (schist soils on the banks of the river Côa, where the weather is hot and dry) and Quinta dos Bons Ares (granite soils of higher elevation with cool growing conditions, adding freshness and vivacity). Ramos Pinto has a rare advantage in the Douro Valley in that it owns 90% of its vineyards, giving it control over its grapes.
Plot by plot, the grapes for this wine are tasted in the vineyard until the time is right for harvesting. After fermentation, portions of the final blend are aged in French oak barrels, large oak vats, and stainless steel for around 12 months before bottling.
The 2021 vintage is very elegant with intense aromatics and a unique freshness. Aromas of strawberry and raspberry, with a hint of cistus (the native Mediterranean flower that has a rich, sweet balsamic aroma and herbaceous undertone) and the toasty aromas of dry, warm earth. Concentrated and complex, this is a dense wine, with velvety tannins and a lasting finish.
A versatile wine, this makes for a perfect aperitif if slightly chilled but its elegance and freshness make it an excellent food-wine. Pair with bean stew, vegetarian dishes, carpaccio, roast beef, poultry, grilled cod or baked fish.
