Cabernet Sauvignon
75cl * Vegan * 14.5% ABV * Stellenbosch, South Africa
The Vergelegen Estate (vergelegen meaning 'situated far away') was given to the governor of the Cape in 1700. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, almost opaque colour while the nose is complex, showing blackcurrants, spice and ripe plums. The palate is full and rich with soft ripe tannins and attractive wood flavours.
Accessible now but will reward careful cellaring over the next 8 years. Best served with fillet, rib eye or lamb grilled over the coals.
"A textbook expression of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, produced at a more than affordable price. Matured in 40% new wood, this is savoury and spicy, with some tobacco leaf aromas, lots of dark cherry and cassis fruit and fine, polished tannins. 2023-29" – 93/100 Points, Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023
"Tasted blind. Blackcurrant pastilles on the really interesting, sophisticated nose. Some savoury inkiness and lots of pleasure. Firm and confident and set for the long term. Lots there with tannin evident only on the end for future development. Long. This is the first wine that reminds me of ambitious bordeaux … luscious – a sort of right-bank style." 18/20 Points, Jancis Robinson (June 2023)
