Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet)
75cl * Sustainable * 15% ABV * Almansa, Castille-La Mancha, Spain
Bodegas Volver was founded in 2004 by Rafael Cañizares, who pays homage to his generation with this Quinta Del ´67. Situated between Valencia and Murcia in eastern Spain, the pillars of this bodega are based on the repositioning of quality Spanish wines and recovering old indigenous vineyards which may have otherwise been lost. Planted between 1970 and 1980, the vineyards of Garnacha Tintorera for Quinta del '67 produce low but concentrated yields and are cultivated sustainably with minimal intervention.
After barrel fermentation, this wine is aged in new French oak for 14 months before bottling. Deep red in colour and complex on nose, Quinta del '67 is full of ripe dark berries, spicy, and balsamic aromas. There is a lot of structure on the palate with silky tannin and again lots of fruit amongst chocolate, and liquorice. A long and persistent finish suggests great ageing potential.
Wine Geek fact: Unlike other grapes, which have clear flesh, Alicante Bouschet is one of the few grapes that has red flesh. It is a teinturier grape, the name comes from the French word for “dye.”
