A very popular story goes that the Manhattan cocktail was created at the Manhattan Club in New York City in 1874; invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for Lady Randolph Churchill (mother of Winston Churchill) at a banquet held in honour of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. However this very likely didn’t happen, given that Lady Randolph was in England at the time, giving birth to Winston.
A pre-mixed combination of premium bourbon, Antica Formula Carpano Vermouth, Cherry Liqueur, Angostura Bitters and sea salt, simply pour into a mixing glass with ice and stir briskly for 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled empty glass and garnish with the zest of an orange or a Maraschino cherry.
