Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura
150cl * 14.5% * Rioja, Spain
2011 was officially designated an excellent vintage by the Regulatory Council of Rioja, a hot, dry summer continuing late into September. This rioja is predominantly Tempranillo sourced from 60 year old bush vines, cultivated in poor chalky-clay soils with limestone in Rioja Alta and Alavesa. The Garnacha is grown on steep slopes, in red soils rich in iron.
Hand-picked grapes are cold macerated prior to fermentation, and afterwards the wine is aged for 4 years in French oak, and for a further 4 years in bottle leading to a wonderfully traditional, complex and aged Rioja. Limited quantities were produced only in magnum, to allow the wine to mature slowly and carefully.
Perfumed black fruit characters on the nose, backed by savoury and spice. The palate has juicy bramble and plum fruit with toasty notes, ripe tannins and tremendous length. Perfect with lamb, game or beef wellington. Alternatively pair with a rich and slow-cooked vegetable and lentil casserole.
