The Robert family have been making Champagne since 1881. Their vineyards are in the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs sub-region which is so called because of the omnipresence of Chardonnay. Within this area, the sleepy village of Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger is known for being best in Champagne for the variety in no small part due to it being the base for legendary producer of "unicorn" Champagne: Salon.  In fact its fair to say that Le Mesnil-sur-Oger sits alongside Le Montrachet in Burgundy (not literally, obviously) as home to the greatest Chardonnay on the planet. At Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the ancient seabed forming the basis of the terroir gives a steely minerality to the wines. Power, finesse, delicacy, and strength.

As a further wine geek fact the André Robert winery backs onto Krug’s famed single vineyard Clos du Mesnil which is Krug’s most sought-after wine and is arguably the most famous vineyard in all Champagne.

Blanc de Blancs Champagnes are loved by sommeliers for their lightness, elegance and freshness as they liven up the palate and prepare you for the meal ahead. Light golden in colour, the nose is expressive, with aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers, as well as slightly buttery notes. In the mouth, the wine tastes fresh, with notes of mineral, with a good length.

As per Salon malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve the fresh delicacy of the fruit. Half the wine is fermented in oak for texture, body and weight. Serve at 10-12 degrees.

"The NV Extra-Brut Les Jardins du Mesnil is based on the 2017 vintage, complemented by reserve wines from 2016, and it was disgorged in May 2021 with four grams per litre dosage. Revealing notions of crisp green apple, citrus oil, wet stones and fresh bread, it's medium to full-bodied, pillow-y and incisive, with a pretty mousse and a bright spine of acidity." 92 POINTS William Kelly The Wine Advocate
