The Ginger Switchel is inspired by a long-lost vinegar-based recipe dating back to Ancient Greece, but they really came into their own in 17th-century England and colonial America, often known as “shrubs” and “switchels”. Farmers kept chilled mason jars of switchels in streams ready for their breaks and it was a particularly popular during the Prohibition-era, providing a warming kick without the alcohol. It is in fact so American that it makes an appearance in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ’Little House on the Prairie’.
At it’s heart, a Switchel is a concentrated infusion of Ginger, Apple Cider Vinegar and a sweetener of some sort, traditionally Honey, Maple Syrup or Molasses. Mother Root Ginger Switchel is a perfectly balanced blend of pressed ginger Juice, blossom honey, organic apple cider vinegar, capsicum extract and a touch of chilli.
Each bottle makes 20 drinks, with 2.5cl of switchel designed to be mixed over ice with still, sparkling or soda water. Not only does the fiery and reviving all-natural infusion have beneficial properties, but it works equally well as either an invigorating anytime spritz, or by spicing up any number of cocktails, rum particularly and perhaps garnished with a sprig of rosemary.
